Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Writer's Life for Me!

Maven Darcy BurkeFirst, let me award B.E. Sanderson a signed copy of Stephanie Rowe's Sex and the Immortal Bad Boy for her hilarious title offering last week. Though I won’t be using Give a Lord a Bone as an official title, picture it as the subtitle. I did come up with a tentative title: Their Wicked Bargain. I also came up with a title for book three that I absolutely adore: His Wicked Heart. So, yay on both counts! Do let me know what you think.

I’ve been suffering from writer’s life this week. What is that? Please contribute to the following:

Angst

  1. Have I edited my WIP enough?
  2. Will my CPs love my WIP as much as me?
  3. Is the hero’s arc strong enough?
  4. Why won’t everyone leave me alone so I can write?!
  5. Your angst here
Excitement
  1. One of my CPs cried reading the end of Her Wicked Ways!
  2. I can’t wait to start my next book in earnest!
  3. Can’t wait for my agent to read HWW!
  4. RWA is going to rock!
  5. Your excitement here
Fear
  1. What if I can’t write another book as quickly and efficiently as HWW?
  2. What if no one ever buys my books?
  3. What if I get a ginormous zit right before the GH ceremony (legitimate fear, people)?
  4. How will I afford gas? (I assume this is everyone’s fear, but perhaps not.)
  5. Your fear here
One thing I really love about the writing community is everyone’s willingness to share their angst, excitement, and fear. They’re the things that unite us as writers and as human beings. So, come on and let’s angst together.

Yay! New Book! I love the new titles, Darcy. Very zippy. Of course, GLAB should be a subtitle. lol

Let's see...

Angst: What if I can't weave the subplot in without sounding contrived?

Excitement: My CP says the premise of my WIP freaks her out! Yay!

Fear: What if I never find an agent because then I'll never get published and all this work will go to waste because even though I'm writing for myself, the whole exercise is pointless if no one else ever reads my work? (Can you tell fear is a biggie for me?)

I look forward to meeting you in SF, Darcy! And the standing ovation when you win ;-)

Angst: What if I just can't write a good book no matter how hard I try.

Excitement: I've learned so much and it's really adding to my WIP

Fear: What if I sacrifice everything (OK- that's a little dramatic) to write a new book, only to be told I'm not good enough, not as good as I think I can be, not as good as my peers, not as good...

Ah, the angst, excitement and fear of being writers. We are a crazy bunch, aren't we?

Okay, here goes:
Angst: Should I start the next book? Or work on promoting the one that's about to come out?

Excitement: The Accidental Demon Slayer comes out next month!

Fear: What if I've used up all my good ideas on the first two books?

Zits happen (har har)
If they do, don't worry, I'll loan you my concealer :)
I'll be lucky not to get hives.

B.E. are you querying? That's the best way to find an agent! And yay for freaking out your CP! I'm looking for your snail mail addy...

Hi Leigh! Can't wait to meet you! I'm fairly certain your angst is completely unfounded, but everyone's entitled to their angst. :-) (Same goes for your fear.)

Angie, I almost added your fear to my own list. But I have tons of ideas. It's the execution that scares the pants off me.

Hi Pam!! Everyone, meet my fellow GH finalist and SF roomie! If you get hives, I'll give you my entire bottle of concealer. And a veil.

I started to respond yesterday and then got hung up on the question of what was the difference between and angst and a fear, and how could I possibly limit myself to just ONE of either.

I'm still not completely sure, but in the interest of neurosis-sharing, I hereby add:

Angst: Can I ever write anything that lives up to my own expectations, let alone anyone else's?

Excitement: I have Darcy's Her Wicked Ways to read. Woohoo!

Fear: What if I can't finish these novellas by September 1? Eeeeeeek!

Angst: What if I'm a hack?

Excitement: Maybe I'm not a hack.

Fear: I'll never know the truth about A and/or B.

Sorry about that Darcy. I didn't come back to look at comments here until just now. I'll get my address off to the Mavens email this morning.

I'm querying. In fact, I have a couple partials out, but it's still a fear of mine. I won Jackie's query critique the other day, so that'll help.

Hey, Darcy!!! Great blog!

I love your titles and can't wait to see these books on the shelves of my local bookstore!

Hmmm. One angst when I am a bundle of them?

Angst : What if I don't live up to the hype of this last year?

Excitement : This is one heckuva ride, even if it is a dream. I can't wait to meet everyone in San Francisco!!

Fear : What if never sell a book because I am just a hack writer who has been very, very lucky?

Eeek! Now I am scaring myself!
