Of course, I immediately set about fixing that, but in the interim, I forgot to thank Erica for the wisdom that led me to do it in the first place :)!Jackie Barbosahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02904049760374126059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7981315063491687057.post-84773446374121200802007-08-27T23:49:00.000-04:002007-08-27T23:49:00.000-04:00Great take-aways, Isabel. Any ah-ha mom...Sounds like a great chapter meeting. Any ah-ha moments you'd like to share? =)

Productive and fun, I must say. The biggest "ah-ha" moment I had was that --this being my sixth chapter meeting since I joined in Jan of this year-- I felt like I belonged with this group. With each meeting I'm starting to develop a connection with this marvelous group of writers.

Second, "ah-ha" moment, during our chapterwide critique, one of our talented members read from her current MS, (she's got a kick-ass contemp voice) in the end after our comments and suggestion she was seriously considering making chapter 3 her opening chapter. So, the "ah-ha" part? Start with BANG, with the action, sometimes several chapters need to written before you find where to begin.

Third "ah-ah", the importantce of having a website even for the unpubs like me. It goes without saying, it's important to establish a professional and approachable web presence even at this "early" stage. And, not only potential readers can stumble upon an unpub's site, agents and editors read those same blogs and visit those same websites.

Fourth "ah-ha", which I'm sure Erica will touch upon sometime during this six-part workblog, is if you can, buy your pen's name(s) and real name's .COM and .NET, even if you don't plan to use all of them.
What if you become the next Stephen King or JK Rowling? Someone is bound to "cash in" along with you. By buying a .COM or .NET under your name for dirt cheap and then try to sell it to you when you hit it big.Isabelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17024134017512079157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7981315063491687057.post-33755689869737767952007-08-27T22:34:00.000-04:002007-08-27T22:34:00.000-04:00Sorry to hear that Lacey, I've gone on and on writ...Sorry to hear that Lacey, I've gone on and on writing a comment only to have something glitchy gobble it up.Isabelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17024134017512079157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7981315063491687057.post-42204063111818159752007-08-27T19:57:00.000-04:002007-08-27T19:57:00.000-04:00Crap. Should this paragon have one single web site, or a number of different web sites?

My vote is multiple web sites. If I want to know about tacos and I go to tacobell.com, I don't want to get fried chicken instead, just because YUM, Inc owns KFC.

In the case of wholly separate businesses and brands, wholly separate web sites are best.

In the case of related businesses--say, you preach at the We Love Jesus church and you also do wedding services in the local park, those could go in separate sections of the same site.

The two main points:

1) Are the businesses similar enough to be relevant to the web visitor?
2) Do both businesses have the same or similar target audience?

If yes to both, same web site. If no to both, different web site. If no to one and yes to one, depends on circumstance, but I'm inclined to think probably separate web sites.

P.S. to Lace: You guessed it!Erica Ridleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05511276393455961757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7981315063491687057.post-21190645670166553102007-08-27T13:15:00.000-04:002007-08-27T13:15:00.000-04:00Not Erica here (newsflash!), but I know Erica has ...Not Erica here (newsflash!), but I know Erica has different websites for her different interests.
